The Conversation - Madeleine Shaw

We caught up with health and wellness guru, Madeleine Shaw, on all things food, healthy living and her top get-the-glow tips.

What kick started your career as a food and wellness influencer?


I was living in Sydney and I had terrible digestive issues. I started to look more at my diet and paying attention to what I put in my body. I was eating at one particular café so often that they gave me a job there, and I ended up falling in love with cooking and learning about nutrition. That was my light bulb moment where work didn’t feel like work and I knew I had to pursue a career in wellness.

Your philosophy is centered on living a healthy lifestyle. Have you always had this intrinsic relationship with food?


Not really. I ate a pretty unbalanced diet of diet coke, low fat yogurt and fruit. I thought that counting calories would make me slim and happy. I have now grown to love cooking and food and looking after my body. For me it’s not a diet or a regime I stick to, it is something I love to do.

What advice would you give to women (or indeed, men) who wish to emulate your healthy philosophy on life, food and wellbeing?


I think it’s about small steps. Swap cereal for some protein packed eggs, try and move for 20 minutes every day and take some time for yourself every day just to breathe.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given as a new mum-to-be?


Be kind to your partner if they put the nappy on back to front! Don’t criticise, just be happy that they are helping.

Consequently, what advice would you pass on?


I’m not sure yet, but I’m sure I’ll have a few gems once the baby arrives.

Describe your style in three words


Classic, Casual and Comfy.

What’s your go-to look?


Jeans, t-shirt, leather jacket with ankle boots - I pretty much live in this or my gym gear.

What 3 traits would you hope your child inherits from you?


A positive attitude, smiling all the time and looking for the best in people.

Any advice for dressing while pregnant?


Get a good pair of maternity jeans, jeans are the thing you have to change first and once you have a good pair you can mix and match with any top.

How has your style changed since becoming pregnant?


It hasn’t really, I’ve just bought more loose fitting clothing. I’m trying to buy clothes that I would wear even when not pregnant so as not to be too wasteful.

And a quick foodie question… Your favourite recipe?


My tray baked cod with asparagus from my new book A Year of Beautiful Eating. It is so easy to make and hits the spot every time.

It’s the ‘Last Supper’, per se, what would be your entre, main and desert? Any beverage to complement?


Entre – seabass ceviche with avocado and lime. Main - slow roast lamb with roast aubergine and tomatoes. Dessert – tarte citron. Drinks – Gin and tonic. I don’t think this meal goes at all well together but they are all my favourite things!
