Letter to my baby – Katherine Ormerod

Dear Baby Grey,

This is my first Mother’s Day as a mother and your arrival in the snow earlier this month was the single best day of my life. Like everything about how you came into this world, it wasn’t what I had expected. I hadn’t thought that it would take so long for your dad and I to make you; I didn’t know how hard I’d find carrying you to nine months and one day.

Though I never for a second doubted how much we desperately wanted you and now that you’re here, it feels so surreal in the most wonderful way

I’d thought that when you arrived, I’d be overwhelmed with emotion and have that cliched tearful moment. But I didn’t. Instead I was so calm and quiet with you, everything about your sturdy 9lb frame and feisty temperament reassured me - it’s like you knew exactly what you were doing, even as I’m still making my way in the dark. I can’t wait to meet you properly and find out every little thing about you from your curly black hair to your wrinkly little toes, it’s like the very best box of secrets that we’re going to have the chance to unfold together.

I know we have a lifetime of Mother’s Days and adventures ahead of us, but this one, the first with you my little snow baby, will always be the sweetest of them all. Love from your Mum
